Certified Nurse Assistant Student Course
MHCA’s Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Training program provides the education and foundational skills needed to begin a career in direct patient care. Through a flexible online classroom experience and hands-on clinical training at a state-approved facility, students gain the knowledge, confidence, and preparation needed to receive CNA certification and provide quality care in long-term care, hospital, hospice, and home health settings.

Course Overview:
The CNA Training Program consists of two components:
- 75 hours of online classroom coursework completed through MHCA’s CANVAS learning platform
- 100 hours of clinical training completed in a long-term care facility
Additional course information:
- Students must be 18 years of age or older to enroll.
- A valid government-issued ID is required during registration.
- Students have 100 days to complete the online coursework.
- Clinical training and certification testing must be completed within six months of the course start date.
- TMU/Headmaster test preparation is included.
- Class size is limited to the first 50 students per course.
- Students will receive CANVAS login information on the first day of class. Please check junk or spam folders if you do not receive the email.
- TMU is Missouri’s CNA testing and registry system. Students will receive testing instructions upon course completion.
- The state certification examination fee is $135 and is separate from tuition.

Registration Requirements for ALL STUDENTS
Registering students must provide:
- Student’s legal name exactly as it appears on their ID
- Copy of the student’s driver’s license or government-issued ID
- Student’s Social Security Number
- Student’s personal email address (school emails should not be used)
Please Note: Students must have access to the internet and a computer for downloading the course book.
Registration Requirements for MEMBERS
*Members: An individual employed at an MHCA-member facility.
Registering students must provide:
- Student’s legal name exactly as it appears on their ID
- Copy of the student’s driver’s license or government-issued ID
- Student’s Social Security Number
- Student’s personal email address (school emails should not be used)
- Facility observer/supervisor contact information
Important Information
- Clinical training is provided by the student’s employer.
- Facilities are responsible for maintaining active training center status and providing qualified clinical supervisors for every shift worked. For questions regarding if you are a training site, email cnaregistry@health.mo.gov. To check the clinical supervisor’s registry, visit https://mo.tmutest.com/.
- Per state regulations, the Director of Nursing (DON) may not serve as the clinical supervisor.
- An observer should be designated during registration. This individual will receive student progress updates and course notifications through CANVAS and can monitor the student’s progress throughout the course.
- Upon course completion, students should work with their observer regarding certification testing.
Registration Requirements for NON-MEMBERS
*Non-members: Individuals registering for the training but are not employed at an MHCA-member facility.
Registering students must provide:
- Student’s legal name exactly as it appears on their ID
- Copy of the student’s driver’s license or government-issued ID
- Student’s Social Security Number
- Student’s personal email address (school emails should not be used)
- Enter “N/A” for facility and supervisor information
- Completed Family Care Safety Registry forms (included in registration)
Please Note: The forms require a $17.50 processing fee.
Important Information
- MHCA will assist with securing a clinical training site near your location.
- Students must provide either:
- Two TB skin tests completed within 20 days, or
- A negative TB blood test
- TB documentation is required before entering any facility. Results should be submitted to Shellie@mohealthcare.com.
Tuition and Payment:
MHCA Member Facilities: $700 per student (includes textbook)
Non-Member Facilities: $1,400 per student (includes textbook)
*Tuition includes assistance with securing a clinical training facility.
Registration and payment must be received no later than the Friday before the course begins. Late registrations cannot be accepted. Registration fees must be paid in full at the time of registration.
Students may make partial payments prior to the registration deadline, provided the balance is paid in full by the Friday before the course begins.
Company checks or money orders should be made payable to MHCA. Credit card payments are accepted. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Course fees MUST be PAID IN FULL prior to student having course access. We do not accept personal checks.
Please Note: The state certification examination fee is $135 and is separate from tuition.
Cancellation and Refund Policy:
- Full refunds are available if cancellation is received by the Friday before the course begins.
- A partial refund of $300 may be issued if the student has not started any coursework.
- Students experiencing emergency situations may be transferred to a future course. Contact MHCA to discuss available options.
- Written refund requests should be submitted to Shellie Goodin at shellie@mohealthcare.com.
Course Extensions:
Students who need additional time beyond the 100-day online course deadline may purchase extensions in 30-day increments for $200 per extension.
Instructor:
Shellie Goodin, RN, MSN, MBA
Shellie Goodin has practiced nursing since 1994 and serves as MHCA’s Director of Clinical and Quality Services. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a Master of Science in Nursing from Clarkson College, and an MBA in Health Care Management from William Woods University.
Her experience spans long-term care, rehabilitation, surgical services, dialysis, and obstetrics. Prior to joining MHCA, she spent 26 years as an instructor at Nichols Career Center, teaching Practical Nursing and Health Science Education. She also taught UAP classes for University Hospital for approximately 10 years and serves as a content expert in health science areas for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Shellie has extensive experience in CNA education, works closely with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and serves as a TMU test observer.
